Children's Groups

CorStone is internationally known for its peer support groups for children and youth facing a life-threatening illness, illness of a loved one, or bereavement. Following a dinner in which all participating family members eat together, our trained facilitators hold 75-minute children’s sessions in one room and a simultaneous circle for adult family members in another.  Our groups use the Center’s proven Attitudinal Healing model which works to validate individual experiences, help individuals to connect to others, and rebuild self-confidence and trust. We also offer groups for teenagers.

In groups for the youngest children, we focus on activities such as games, drawing or movement designed to help express pent-up feelings. When childhood innocence has been shattered by the specter of death and loss, creative play and art activities can help them find their own voice and reconnect with feelings of safety and trust.

For teens and adults in families experiencing trauma and loss, we share personal stories that connect people together. Those connections have great power to help heal broken hearts.

Please note that a confidential intake is required before registration or attendance in a Children and Loss group. Please contact us at 415-331-6161 x108. Your call will be returned by a qualified Marriage and Family Therapy Intern (MFTI) within one business day.

The Children and Loss group is currently available on a donation basis. A $10 donation per family per two-hour group session is requested.

Dinners generously donated by these local restaurants: Arawan Thai, Insalata's, Marin Joe's, Outback Steakhouse, Pasta Pomodoro, Pizza Antica, Saylor's South of the Border, and Tommy's Wok.

Children and Loss

We offer support groups for children (5 to 12), teens (13-19) and their parents. The opportunity for youth to meet others their own age who are also coping with loss, and who can relate to how they feel is particularly meaningful.

Bereavement Group: For children and teens who have lost a significant person in their lives through death. Children and teens who have experienced divorce in their family are also welcome.

Living With Illness Group: For children, teens and their siblings living with life-threatening illness or those who have an ill parent.

Parent Groups: While children attend one of the groups, parents meet together in their own group to share their feelings regarding the illness or death in the family.
